Robot Shooter Alpha Release

Introducing - Robot Shooter

Behold the culmination of about 30 weekends of work! Robot Shooter is a Physics FPS. Or at least that's what I call it.

You fight an endless horde of robots. Dead machines can be shot to push them around into piles allowing you to pass over obstacles that would otherwise block your way. This release is meant to provide a general sense of how the game would work to get general feedback on how it feels to play. If you have any comments feel free to post them on the project page.

Robot Shooter is the second Godot project that I've released after my Toronto Game Jam project Jalopy. This one started life in last year's TOJam and was written in Unity engine originally. This version is a ground up rewrite in Godot engine in order to be free of any weird engine licensing changes. That did mean a lot of work getting physics working though.

What's Next?

For now there is no official "roadmap" since it's too early in development to have a solid list of exactly what is being made. I do, however, have a number of revisions that will go into future updates

  • Nail down a visual style for the game. More info next devlog
  • Flesh out scenery of the starting map
  • Add props which could also be used for passing physics related obstacles
  • An explosive weapon
  • Additional enemy types
  • More and better environmental audio feedback
  • More variety in physics challenges
  • More detail to indicate robots are damaged or wrecked

Known Issues

As this is a very early version of the game it has a good number of known issues. These are the most noticeable

  • Picking up weapons is more difficult than it should be sometimes
  • Discarded weapons cannot be picked up again
  • It is possible to "ramp" off of dead enemies and launch to unintended heights by doing so
  • Lighting and shadow effects are less than ideal with a number of places leaking light or showing graininess
  • A couple places the player can see inside walls
  • The player's first person gun can clip into walls
  • The skybox is way too obviously a box
  • Enemies sometimes spin in place for not entirely clear reasons
  • One enemy type's sideways shuffle animation is twitchy
  • Flying enemies sometimes get stuck on ledges
  • Damage flash effect is more extreme than intended after taking multiple hits
  • A number of buildings are either untextured or lacking detail
  • Some sections where there should be buildings and other scenery do not have any
  • Explosion setpiece does not have any shockwave/damage effect
